Hi, thanks for the note.

It doesn't really matter what I prefer as the guidelines at WP:RUS are clear in this case. But you need to read the entire section on "Use Conventional Names" and understand that it deals with two separate issues.

One issue is the proper romanization of the name (also referred to as the WP:RUS variant). This is based on the Cyrillic letters in the original name, and yes, Е does need to be distinguished from Ё. So the proper romanization is Semyon, as you say. Also, Khrushchyov is the proper romanization for that name.

However, the other issue deals with the proper name to use for the title of the article. In some cases this may be the same as the proper romanization, but there are other factors to consider so it may not be. Note the lead sentence states "When possible, use a conventional English name instead of romanization."

Then if you look farther down under "People" you see "If the person is the subject of English-language publications, the spelling predominantly used in such publications should be used."

All the English-language publications I found use "Semen". Therefore that is the correct title for the article.

The same is true of Khrushchev. That is the name predominantly used in English-language publications. So it is not contradictory because in cases where the article's title uses a different name "The WP:RUS variant must be a redirect to the main article".

So I think it's clear. If you still disagree we can open a discussion and see what other people think.

BTW, it's generally always a good idea if you plan to move an article to propose the move on the article's talk page first. (I can only imagine what kind of flak you would get if you moved the Khrushchev article without warning.)

I don't really see any need to make an exception in this case. He has been referred to as "Semen" for all these years and it apparently hasn't caused any problems. And I don't think we need to worry about him being offended by the association with sperm :^). It's a pretty respectable term meaning "seed" (similar to the Russian word семя). What about Dick Cheney? Isn't it worst to be associated with a slang term for penis? Anyway, that's my opinion. Gr8white (talk) 07:23, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Valentin Kovalyov

Hello, I noticed that you were the creator of the Kovalyov disambiguation page in November 2006 which included an entry on this name as follows:

I am trying to find out the history of the title of Justice Minister of Russia which is now called Minister for Justice of Russia. I am not sure when/if this title change took place, I think probably sometime during the term of Vladimir Ustinov because his article uses both terms interchangably, whereas the successor Alexandr Konovalov only says Minister for Justice whereas Ustinov's predecessory Yury Chaika only uses the term Justice Minister Anyway this is somewhat immaterial. What this is really about is the earliest predecessor to the position of Justice Minister I could find is Sergei Stepashin. This person took office in 1997, and his predessor is listed to be the exact same name on your disambiguation page: Valentin Kovalyov. There's no article on this person, and in trying to find info on him on Wikipedia, I found your entry. Since the person you wrote about died in 1972, unless the position was vacant for 27 years, I think it is likely that these are different people. This information was added here by User:Colchicum who I will contact to verify if the name is accurate.

As such, who should the Valentin Kovalyov article be about, and who should require extra information in parenthesis such as (pilot) or (Justice Minister) to specify who they are? I am not sure who is more notable. How big of a hero was this pilot in the Soviet Union? What kind of notable and memorable things has he done? Until I know otherwise, I am probably guessing that the Justice Minister is more appropriate to have the article about, and also writing (pilot) or (hero) is much shorter and simpler than writing (Justice Minister). Sorry to jump in here K, Tyciol, when disambig'ing Russian names we do so on their patrynomic. The justice minister would be titled Valentin Alekseyevich Kovalyov. The war hero would be Valentin Fyodorovich Kovalyov, with the disambig at Kovalyov as is now. This seems to be the way that Russian articles have progressed, and its a good way of continuing. Hey K, I founds some books, and have uploaded them to Commons, and was wondering if you might know of online sources where one can find other things such as these, well on any topic, that may be suitable for us, so that I can upload them to Commons. Some of the titles include:

Surnames

It is actually doing that on purpose, pages are not supposed to have interwiki links to disambiguation pages unless they too are a disambiguation page. The page on english wikipedia is not marked as a disambiguation page whereas the ones it removed are marked as disambiguation pages. The bot was working as it was supposed to, either the english version needs to be marked as a disambiguation page if it is one or it needs to have its interwikis fixed to point to the Surname articles on the relevant wikis and not the disambig pages. -Djsasso (talk) 15:30, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

A good half of the articles in WP are still unreferenced. Plus, Agapova's article is not even a stub, it's a sub-stub, so there's nothing to "reference" yet. I decided to leave the "unreferenced" part intact, for you are tecnically right about it. However, I removed the "notability" thing due to the fact that she is notable in the USSR. The original Find-A-Grave link (on which this list is based) is [2] - which definitely isn't a bust of Napoleon, whoever it is. You can see the years 1919 and 1967 in the inscription, and letters that look a lot like the name claimed to me. --Alvestrand (talk) 11:20, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Find-A-Grave edits

I see you have a number of edits in Find-A-Grave now....

the purpose of these lists is really to get rid of them; first, they document what names are on Find-A-Grave (or were in 2005) and thought of as "famous", and then, when we know we have them on Wikipedia, we can delete them.

The redlinks that are left at any given time are hints that this person *might* be worthy of a Wikipedia article.

If it's spelled wrong on Find-A-Grave, I think it's kind of better to make a note than to correct the name in the list - correcting it in the list will give a false impression of what's on Find-A-Grave (unless F-A-G has fixed it too). And if you correct them, please do correct them both in the name and in the {{search}} macro on the same line - otherwise people searching for this person will be searching for a different name than what's on the left - which is confusing!

could you please justify the notability tag that you have added to the article?

Nazarov is a well-known mathematician, in particular, a recepient of the Salem prize, which is the most prestigious prize in mathematical analysis.

As you may see, most of the S.p. recipients have a wiki article.

The current article is correctly labelled as stub, but what is wrong with the notability?

Hi,

I am sorry, I disagree with you. Salem prize is a well-known reward (see the wikapsi article), awarded to, perhaps, 20 mathematicians (during its existence). The fact that FN was awarded the Salem prize is objective, unlike the notion of 'mathematical genius' which is a speculation. Again, I agree that this is a stub (like many other wiki articles), but this is only a reason to erase the notability tag and leave the stub tag.

A long time

Hi Newman! Just so that you know that I am still not out and hoping you are doing fine. Life has been a very frightening roller coaster for me lately. I got badly affected by the present economic recession, just while I was trying to relocate and start new stuff. Wikipedia was one of my favorite places to release steam and get entertained, but in the past months I just could't bring myself to revive the same mood. I have still many challenges ahead. Are you the author of the article on A. N. Khvostov? If so, I would like to know if the photo of Khvostov which you posted is restricted by a copyright, and whether I could possibly use it in a book I am writing about the deportation of ethnic Germans from Poland and Russia to inner Russia during World War I. My name is Victor and I'm a storyteller with the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that supports Wikipedia. I'm chronicling the inspiring stories of the Wikipedia community around the world, including those from readers, editors, and donors. Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge!
