Untitled[edit]

If Fenner were a rancher, talking about a "rabbit plague" with the meaning used here might make sense. However, it is confusing in an article about a scientist and medical doctor, where it sounds like a disease infecting the rabbit population. Gene Nygaard 12:53, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC) Actually, I'm so confused I'm not sure if "plague" in this article refers to the problem presented by an overpopulation of rabbits, or to the introduced virus used to reduce that problem. Someone who knows the subject should reword this article. Gene Nygaard 13:00, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Rabbit resistance to myxoma, incomplete control of rabbit plague[edit]

This statement is not quite right... the more virulent strains of myxoma became extinct or rare as they kill rabbits before the virus can be transmitted. the mutation rates in viruses are quite large, and less virulent forms emerged within 10-ish years. these forms became more common as they could be transmitted before the rabbit died.

in simple terms, the myxoma evolved to be less virulent, as opposed to rabits evolving resistance in a similar fashion to how bacteria evolve antibiotic resistance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 150.203.111.120 (talk) 07:48, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

agreed ... and hence the glorifying statement of "control of Australia's rabbit plague through the introduction of Myxoma virus" in the lede should probably be modified. Fenner attempted control, but he didnt achieve control - at most temporary control in hindsight. He lived long enough to see this. --Wuerzele (talk) 11:11, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
