Category:Zoroastrian gods[edit]

Zosodada did an partial attempt to submit this deletion request to VfD, where it does not belong. His text is below. This is a pro-forma nomination by me, I don't know anything about this topic, so no vote. jni 16:30, 23 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Zoroastrianism is a monotheistic religion. The items listed here include Angra Mainyu and Soma as Z. "gods" which is equivalent to listing Satan and Holy Water in a category called "Christian gods" -- there's a serious systemic bias issue here dependent on a myopic concept of "gods"... • There are Christian gods, even if Christians are loathe to admit it. Roman Catholics have a whole pantheon of demi-gods called "saints", and Islamic-Judeo-Christian tradition has a race of dieties called "Angels". (Note, these beings serve the functions of dieties in other religions, so why aren't they gods?)
    • Because they aren't. Your argument makes about as much sense as saying "All U.S. Senators and all U.S. Congressional representatives should go in the category 'U.S. Presidents' because they are all Presidents even if Americans are loathe [sic] to admit it."
  • I agree this should be a delete. 132.205.45.110 18:47, 25 Jan 2005 (UTC)

      • I did no such thing. Though I have noticed that Wikipedia software occassionally blows up in my face.
  • Rename to Category:Ahuras. -Sean Curtin 00:02, Jan 26, 2005 (UTC)
  • Rename. Needs work but could be very useful. Bacchiad 00:51, 26 Jan 2005 (UTC)
  • Reposting erased vote. Merge with Category:Zoroastrianism. Also delete Category:Zoroastrian mythology. --Gene s 10:55, 26 Jan 2005 (UTC)

  • I agree completely with Zosodada, and find it hard to believe someone actually created this category in the first place. To keep those promoting the use of an alternate name happy, I suggest:
    * Zoroastrian theological pantheon (had 'God' implications, but they aren't so obvious)
    * Zoroastrian deities (more neutral).
    * Zoroastrian divinities (even more neutral).
    Of the three, I personally prefer 'Zoroastrian divinities' since that would allow some scattered half-para articles (eg Yazata) to have a proper home as well.
    But... the category really ought to be deleted. Fullstop 16:09, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • ps: Angels are not deities. A deity is a god or goddess (lat: deus, God), while Angel comes from angelus, messenger. The wp:article clearly states that the a) "duties [of an Angel] are to assist and serve God", and b) "Most scholars now believe that humanity was first introduced to angelology [...] by the prophet Zoroaster" (no, I didn't write the article ;). According to the Random House dictionary, an Angel is "a celestial attendant of God." and further, "In medieval angelology, angels constituted the lowest of the nine celestial orders". • "Zoroastrian gods" should not be merged with Category:Persian gods for the simple reason that Zoroastrianism (and Mazdayasniism) existed long before the Persian empire did. "Persian gods" itself is a rather peculiar category, since "Persian"(ism?) is not a religion. In fact, I suggest that category (along with Category:Persian goddesses and Category:Persian deities) be deleted too. Moreover, due to its age, Zoroastrianism (and Mazdayasniism) "share" quite a few divinities with the latter-day near-east religions. Heck, according to Persian mythology, Abraham read the Avesta while in the fire into which he was thrown by [[Nimrod (king)|Nimrod], but that doesn't make the Avesta a Jewish book, does it? :) - Fullstop 17:34, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
