Quizzes for individuals or small teams[edit]

I've added that start times are *often* only approximate rather than (always) approximate. In quizzes that I've run, if the teams get to thinking that 9 p.m. means the questions will start at around 9.15 p.m, then some teams will tend to arrive close to 9.15 p.m. with the result that the questions can't get started until around 9.30 p.m. Thus the quiz start time gets progressively later and later, week after week. My tip is to start at the advertized time; if teams arrive late, you can *quickly* run through Round 1 questions for them between Round 1 and Round 2. If you're asking, dump the commercial sites. They don't provide ANY further understanding of pub quizzes, they're just there to shill on Wikipedia's back. Be bold and hack whatever doesn't work. --MattShepherd 15:11, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure why some of the links were taken off or why it was assumed they were all commercial sites. They weren't. One was a listing of quizzes in the UK which is not run for profit and has no advertising or commercial content. Not sure either why two in particular were left untouched... -- Frank, 6 August 2006.

http://QuizNight.net (pub quizzes in the Seattle area) was added to external links. This is for a small local area only. Nothing less than a national webvsite would be considered for this page, and then it would have to include relevant content and add to the average users understanding of the topic. Bingo Quiz[edit]

I am a little unhappy about the external link to Pub Quiz USA added by user 24.21.18.50. This appears to be the website of a commercial quiz organiser. The same user also modified the Bingo Quiz section to add details of the format used by Pub Quiz USA. Anyone else have an opinion about this? Chrisj1948 (talk) 10:13, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Poorly written, uncited and not very encyclopaedic[edit]

This article is poorly written and has a bias to the UK (it was amazingly a featured article). I have added an Australian section, removed some uncited and potential contentious claims and have provided some citations. Much of what is written is not very encyclopaedic. I am not too happy about the bunch of 'citations' which you inserted. That many were for charitable concerns still does not make them appropriate, and they had the character of commercial external links rather than source material relevant to the article. Agreed. 1. "Unsubstantiated claims" should not be removed without discussion, they should have a ^{[citation needed]} tag added. 2. Quiz nights not help in a pub are technically not pub quizzes. 3. There is no need for a separate section on Australia when the activities included also happen in other countries. 4. There is no need to add "in the United Kingdom" to "little evidence of them existing before 1970" unless there were puib quizzes elsewhere before that time. 5. The original article on Quiz Nights was redirected here. The web pages that I linked to were for past events. The truly commercial one I removed the http start of the URL so it couldn't be linked to unless some one wanted to, in any case it provided a citation for the information. The addition of 'in the United Kingdom' is perfectly correct for the external web link. The information about Pub Quizzes is about the UK. Ozdaren (talk) 12:44, 25 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Digital Pub Quiz[edit]

I've removed this recently added section because a can't find a decent citation for it, and it was also somewhat unencyclopedic and POV/promotional.

If someone has a citation (note that the Facebook page is not good enough) the entry could be added as follows:

In a digital pub quiz wireless handsets replace the more usual pen and paper. A time limit can be set on responses (e.g. 60 seconds). It is also possible to determine which team answers a question first for spot prizes, tiebreaks etc. The first digital pub quiz was held at the Woodlands Hotel in Blackburn, Lancashire on the 29 July, 2010.
