I'm surprised anyone found your usernic offensive. The only names that realistically could be judged as offensive are those that explicitly mocked beliefs, sexuality, race or gender. I certainly wouldn't worry about DW: I think he needs his head examined. As for your taste in what you smoke, no big deal. I have dabbled there myself, but because I have epilepsy I can't do so again, as it can counteract anti-epilepsy tablets and bring on fits. I'm restricted to 'straight' tobacco these days!!! And the sad thing, is scanning those sites, is that whatever truth is in is marginalized - rarely dealt with as an issue elsewhere; thus these issues are left to racists, or quasiracists - I frankly don't those people as being much different than any other ethnocentrists anywhere, except that they have coordinated color-schemes. That site by the way seems to tow a very slick line - the high road to racism, as it were.

Hi TK, I don't think changing the word 'with' to 'on' on the [UN . . . Iraq] page solves the problem. on and with are both used, the former by anti-war people, the latter by pro-war people. So we have just moved one POV and replaced it for another. I've another suggestion: instead call it ' The UN Security Council and the proposed Iraq war'. That way you avoid any hint of bias, by dropping all words that could be seen as in any way expressing a POV and instead calling it a term that all sides would be able to use: the Proposed Iraq War. An excellent point... reminds me of a conversation with a friend of mine who said something about African-Americans being taken as slaves, and it took him a minute to realize they weren't African-American until they got to America. Tuf-Kat

That reminds me of the story of a US journalist from a network that banned the word 'black' as politically incorrect. She wanted to ask Nelson Mandela the sort of discrimination he had experienced as a black man in apartheid South Africa. But could not say black. And definitely couldn't say coloured. So ended up saying "What sort of discrimination did you experience as an . . . em . . . African-American in South Africa?" Mandela looked at her in disbelief, then burst into a fit of laughter that lasted most of the interview! JTD 02:22 Feb 23, 2003 (UTC)

Its like Irish-Americans and Irish people; eg, the war we had here over my page on the Irish famine. Irish-Americans tend to have a rather black and white analysis, based around '700 years of British oppression' 'British genocide in Ireland' etc, whereas Irish people tend to cringe at what is perceived as their simplistic and frequently dubious theories. Whereas we see Irish Americans as rather poorly informed on Ireland, believing in simplistic theories of 'gaelic-speaking catholic-speaking Ireland' and coming to Ireland wearing green blazers to sing republican songs in tourist pubs and kiss the Blarney stone, they see the native Irish as 'puppets of British rule', 'west-brits' and 'traitors' (Or tories, as I was called in Wiki once), who are betraying their motherland, nationalism and catholicism.


A gang of friends of mine once 'freaked out' some green clad Irish-Americans by claiming how Ireland was about to rejoin the commonwealth, how we would accept the Queen as 'Queen of Ireland' and how we wanted to put the famous 'King Billy' statue blown up by the IRA decades ago back, and take down the statue of nationalist hero Thomas Davis that replaced it. - Taking down that statue would be a god-send: it takes Davis look like Frankenstein! - In a final twist, they brought them into a pub, all drank budweiser (to the Americans' horror; they believed everyone in Ireland drank Guinness!) before revealing that they were in a gay bar (true), that they were all gay (false) and that the next president of Ireland may well be a prominent gay senator (possibly true). The yanks probably needed to see their shrinks when they went back states-side! (They should have brought them to Dun Laoghaire, which recently restored a magnificant monument to Queen Victoria that the IRA tried to blow up some years ago!) JTD 02:43 Feb 23, 2003 (UTC)

You thought that was weird? I could figure out the mathematical meanings quite easily, but that aside of yours is just crawling with too much US-oriented cultural context for me to make sense of. I have been told what an "English major" is, but I have no idea what "testing out" of requirements for one is. Does it mean you were found to have enough mathematical comprehension beforehand so you didn't need the specialist area? or that you were given the specialist area and passed it? or what? PML.
Yes, I'm trying to confuse all non-Americans. I have a dastardly plan... It just means I had to take a test to see where I should start taking math classes in college (a placement test) and my score was just barely high enough to place me in classes which I didn't need to take because I wasn't studying math. So has my Coolness Quotient gone up now? ;) I haven't met anyone famous myself, but my sister has met Leeroy from The Prodigy, just as a bit more family-related name dropping... :) My sister was friends with an unsigned Essex-based band called Real TV, which split up a few years ago. Apparently Leeroy is now doing some work with Johnny out of Real TV, so I think that's how my sister got to meet him. According to this page, Kieron from Real TV has also worked with The Prodigy. Is it okay to write about unsigned bands here, by the way? Hi Tuf-Kat, could you check I've done the right thing with Grammy Awards of 2001? It looks as though Grammy.com list the year as the year the award is given for rather than the year the award is given in. So, for example, they list the 44th Awards as 2001, although they were given out in 2002. That's how I read it all anyway. I've moved the list you did for the 44th awards to Grammy Awards of 2002. I'm going to carry on working on the whole section, but wanted to make sure I'm doing it right first! I hope this makes sense, many thanks for any help -- sannse 19:19 Mar 14, 2003 (UTC)

I just created a writeup on the history of the Rio album; was checking "what links here" to make sure there were no ambiguous links (to Rio de Janeiro, or whatever), and saw you had this album on your top 40! Re: diff error for One-hit wonders in the United States; it looks like the page was renamed between the time you loaded Recentchanges and the time you clicked the diff link. This turned that page from being an article with many revisions to being a redirect page with no past revisions, making a diff on its single revision impossible. The error message is a sort of 'this should never happen' -- which it wouldn't if nobody ever changed pages. ;) A diff link would never be generated in RC for a page with no past revisions... but a page can suddenly have no past revisions after it previously did. The error should probably be clarified to explain wherein the problem lies and guess probably methods of recourse. --Brion 21:22 Mar 16, 2003 (UTC)

BTW, I'm really attempting to make Wikipedia's popular music section useful and interesting. I'm making multiple stubs in the hopes of preventing uselessly POV articles like what was at Wish You Were Here (oodles of Barrett fans would disagree with virtually every word of the original). I know they're stubs and sometimes seem useless, but I'd rather have a factual stub to redirect to than useless POV stubs or absolutely nothing. People are more likely to add a fact or two to a stub than write an entire article. I encourage people to do as Danny and KQ have done and point out crappy pseudo-stubs for me to fix -- I may not fix them immediately, as my job and other issues are keeping me busy, but I will get around to them eventually. If an article doesn't have an album cover, some properly wikified introduction, a track listing and personnel list, please let me know here on my talk page. Tuf-Kat

When I was a third level student I edited a college magazine. My absolute pet hate was people who wrote about music, because they all conformed to the one set of semi-literate clichés. Rock, folk, traditional, classical - each side had their own set of clichés which they repeated ad nausaum. Then I picked up music magazines and realised they relied on the same clichés too; a mixture of no comprehension of grammar, spelling or sentence structure with wild hyperbole and a conviction that band A or B had worked out the meaning of life and were the most important life form ever created. Reading Michael reminds me of that - the inarticulate trying to be articulate through music clichés, parroting the 'style' but without understanding enough to know how to do it to even pass level. One or two were even as bad at Michael at it. In used to groan every Tuesday (at 10.15am) the first of the music 'writers' (alleged) would arrive with their usual inarticulate scripple and think they had written the King James Bible and be perplexed by I could not use it and I desparately rang around pleading with anyone I knew to submit something so I could say 'sorry, Greg/Ciaran/Jonas/Anna/Francine (the fucking awful five) no space. I've someone writing about the outer moon on Jupiter, Ronald Reagan's hair-dye, Margaret Thatcher's electric razor, anything to keep the musical crap out. And of course if you re-wrote it to confirm to thinks like spellings, full stops, words (!!!) they would look at you with horror, as if you philistine had destroyed their 'Hamlet'. In the end I lost it one day with one particularly awful writer (I can lose it sometimes!!!) who produced 1,100 words of a review that broke just about every rule of grammar ever known, and bollocked him. He now writes for a mainstream rock magazine, and still doesn't know what to do with full stops. STÓD/ÉÍRE 04:26 Apr 3, 2003 (UTC)

Hi TK, A bit of advice. Don't even try to talk to Susan Mason and reason with her. Just about everyone I know has come away pulling their hair out. People have left wiki over 'her'. Two of her alter egos, Lir and Vera Cruz, have been banned. Her infamous technique is to generate up a conversation, not listen to a single word you say, or even more infamously misrepresent it, then go and do the very thing you are trying to convince her not to do, very often while you are on the talk page answering yet more idiotic questions from her, er him. His name is actually Adam. Mav has the full details. If you thought Michael was a pain in the butt, he was a rank amateur compared to Adam. RK can tell stories of dealing with Susan under her 'Dietary Fiber' persona, 172 of experiences with 'Vera'.

Personally, I don't know why someone who has been banned twice and about whose identity there is no mystery (they even know the full name of the man behind it!), as well as someone with the history of Dietary Fiber, Susan Mason, Vera Cruz and Lir, is let be on wiki at all. When DF came on a couple of weeks ago, there were a few days of good work, so much so that a lot of us, myself included, decided to ignore past experiences and give them a clean slate. That lasted about three days before DF ended up being called a liar who was fabricating stuff by RK who indicated he never ever wanted to have anything to do with her again. After being told that her conduct was being watched, DF disappeared and SM 'returned' and has been causing chaos ever since. Tonight, having mucked up a simple two line paragraph on the history of the USSR and refused to accept the obvious muck up was wrong (I'd written the original; her very badly worded version created the wrong impression) and having had to be constantly reverted by myself and 172, she went to James I (where I had done some work some hours before) which she promptly mucked up - by ignoring agreed naming rules for british royalty (but then she did try to get us to change every list to {surname, first name}, tried to change get us to change hundreds of references to elections to her choice of way (both were voted down easily, after she tried unilaterally to move some things) and this week's biggie, abandon agreed naming conventions to do things her way!!!). When James I was protected, she went and screwed up Charles I. And God knows what page 'Susan' is messing with now.

The thing is, Adam obviously has talent, but such an ego that no-one can get through to him to tell him to stop acting the prick. Everyone has tried and just about everyone has given up in frustration. So I would not try to have a serious talk with 'Susan'; it has been tried and tried and tried and tried, with the one result - the person coming away screaming 'aaaaaaah!' in frustration as your words are (presumably deliberately) mis-understood, misquoted, misrepresented and thrown back at you, to the common reponse 'But I didn't say that'. That's my experience, 172's, Deb's, Zoe's, Mav aint a fan, RK openly calls her a liar, etc etc STÓD/ÉÍRE 08:19 Apr 12, 2003 (UTC)

Possibly- IIRC correctly I started up an article on NMTB, then realised that one already existed and so merged the two at one of the pages (can't remeber which). It's hard to tell what the 'correct' capitalisation of the title is as on the cover it's all capitalised. Feel free to make the redirect go the other way... The stuff you're writing on the music of various countries is just fantastic! Are you using any particular sources, or is the stuff just coming out of your head? What I know about the Music of Martinique and Guadeloupe could be written on the back of an unusually small postage stamp... --Camembert

Hey Stan, you're not going to like this but I have found a big problem with zillions of wikipedia pages. Those dealing with fictional characters! As fictional characters are fantasy, why are they allowed on wikipdedia. When I looked at Stan it says "The first three verses are delivered by Stan, with the third actually being spoken in the car itself as he is about to drive off a bridge." I am sure if this were true then Eminiem would have been arrested for making a snuff record. So Stan is not a fictional character, but a real person "in the car itself".
