American Idiot (song) : Pop Punk?[edit]

I don´t think that this song is Pop. Is not true punk, but if you want something besides Punk Rock, i suggest Alternative Rock, a genre that can include many others and may keep everyone happy.

I disagree with that. It suggests that if you don't know what genre the song is, just call it Alternative Rock. I'm going to change the genre to Pop punk. Jedi feline 11:15, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The problem with "pop punk" is that some people regard it as pejorative. Pop tends to be less well respected than rock. This is definitely not an alternative rock song, and it has quite a mainstream sound. It's also not true punk, although displaying clear punk influence. I think we should just play it safe and call it a rock song, which it unquestionably is. RobbieG 13:58, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pop punk is regarded as pejorative because the idiots who give it a mad name (example: simple plan)..American idiot is Alternative rock/Punk Rock. Maybe even pop punk. But not hard rock.--Revilal90 (talk) 05:25, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I listed the genre as pop punk because it talks about the American Idiot song under wiki's Pop Punk page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.104.253.11 (talk) 08:15, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

American Idiot has significant influence of alternative rock and you can realize that listening to the 1st and 2nd guitar distortion. It's not alternative rock, neither punk rock. The easiness of the chords makes me remember punk rock, but so modified over a pop melody in the chorus. To classify this song as punk rock or alternative rock is wrong, they are only influences, not the essential genre. The song looks like The Middle (Jimmy Eat World) because of the chorus, and experts classifies it as pop punk and also power pop. I think there's no classification better than this. --Alexrv3espanha (talk) 14:36, 7 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Failure?[edit]

This article keeps calling this song a "failure." That's news to me, as it as been omnipresent on rock radio for over a year. Is this based on an interpretation of the chart numbers? youngamerican (talk) 14:03, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Billboard[edit]

The article says "(previous singles had not been allowed to chart)" why? Can someone explain or cite? Pnkrockr 20:32, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lyrics and CD cover[edit]

I've added the lyrics and the alternate CD cover to the article. Some may find the lyrics offensive though. If so, edit them out Jammie 21:11, 17 December 2006 (UTC).[reply]

I created this page at my mom's office[edit]

I didn't create this account at the time, but I am the one who created this page. I added that this song was on Madden NFL 2005. Somebody deleted that fact, but I'm not certain WHO it was. Oh, and my mom's office's IP address is credited for creation. Mewtwowimmer 05:45, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Offensive Language[edit]

Hey,

Being a Punk and Green Day fan, I noticed that you had a sample, i listened it through and i noticed that it left the swear word in. Remove it!!!! Or if you do not want to remove the sample, put a bleep in its place

L8er man,

CoolChris 07:31, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

LOL. Punk? You keep telling yourself that, grandma... -SA-

That's the way the song is..and telling you're a punk doesn't make you one..if you were one, you wouldn't bother telling us to remove it.--Revilal90 (talk) 05:26, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

tempo/rhythm?[edit]

might someone want to include the tempo/rhythm? it's 186bpm 4/4. (found that out after trying to set it up right for the metronome in garageband) 24.45.158.155 03:16, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Song Target[edit]

The article states that the songs target is the Administration under George Bush, I would disagree, if you listen to the lyrics of the song it is clear that (apologies to our American cousins) is aimed at the populace who are supporting the current administration. For example:

Don't wanna be an American idiot. One nation controlled by the media. Information nation of hysteria. It's going out to idiot America.

Therefore the Government release the hysteria and the nation believes them. Personally I believe the paragraph should be brought in line with the lyrics. Any thoughts? G0ggy 09:46, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that that's what the song's about, but there are various other theories that exist. I have heard it claimed that the song is "anti-American", but I don't think it is. RobbieG 13:55, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Since it's not a song with the intention to deteriorate the American populace, but a song to enlighten; I find the claim of being "anti-American" a bit ridiculous.Aaberg (talk) 00:29, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Chart peaks[edit]

Would it be possible to put a graph of where this song landed on each of the charts. I noticed that the page for "Welcome to the Black Parade" single had one and thought it would be nice to have here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.207.153.165 (talk) 15:43, 27 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Plagiarism[edit]

I removed this as the references do not seem to support the claim. In fact, one reference seem topbe saying a judge had dismissed the claim out of hand. This is a serious accusation, and I would not re-add reference to it unless it is proven in court. Dlohcierekim 15:53, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Favorite Son[edit]

Where does the track Favorite Son belong? The single? The EP? Somewhere else? I got it through Limewire.--Greenday21 (talk) 21:46, 2 July 2008 (UTC)Greenday21 Hello? Greenday21 (talk) 14:11, 21 August 2008 (UTC)Greenday21[reply]

Protest song?[edit]

I mean, I don't want to criticize Bob or Joan, but would you consider this a "protest song"? Not as in the Vietnam conflict, but as a spiritual successor? 72.221.127.126 (talk) 05:44, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

From this very article: " "American Idiot" contends that mass media has orchestrated paranoia and idiocy among the public." Who knew that Billie Joe Armstrong and Donald Trump had so much in common? Hobbe Yonge (talk) 04:02, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Length and Bullet in a Bible single?[edit]

On here it states that the length of the album version of the song is 5:32 and the radio edit is 2:54, which is not correct, the album version is 2:54, so i removed it, also it says this was released as a single from Bullet in a Bible, which is not true, and there's no source for it, so i removed that too. --Chickenguy12 (talk) 12:15, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Music video[edit]

It should be noted that there are two versions of the video, a censored and an uncensored one. When the green flag washes away in the uncensored version, it reveals a huge red, white, and black swastika flag underneath. --2003:71:4E48:5283:50D5:E134:6E47:2894 (talk) 14:31, 5 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"American Idiot" was prominently played during the 2004 comedy movie "Eurotrip". Will add to article.[edit]
