Most of these days are not public holidays[edit]

Most of the days listed on this page are not public holidays. It would be better if the page was titled holidays and festivals in Taiwan. Alternatively it could be changed to only list those days which are official government holidays. That would be much more accurate. Although undoubtedly some would try to argue for the use of Republic of China rather than Taiwan. As it stands this page is inaccurate and misleading. Merge with Holidays in Taiwan[edit]

These two articles seem to discuss the same subject. The public holidays in Taiwan and the Republic of China should be the same, considering they are geographically identical. These two articles should be merged. Neelix (talk) 15:54, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Merge the 2 lists. The items in the lists are virtually the same. However, should the title of the page be kept as Public holidays in the Republic of China or Public holidays in Taiwan? Pretty controversial... --impactF= 19:49, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Don't merge. I think that the titles should be kept as is, because Holidays in Taiwan is pretty neutral, but Public Holidays in Taiwan would be an obvious POV issue. Public Holidays in the Republic of China is also more suitable, because public holidays are dictated by the state and the state's name is Republic of China.   • Are all the days actually defined in law by the ROC? If so, then Public Holidays in the Republic of China makes sense because we are documenting political law of the occupying power. However, if we are including both legally defined and non-legally recognized traditionally practiced holidays, we should use "Holidays in Taiwan" or "Holidays of Taiwan".   • Merge. They are pretty much the same thing, and half of the holidays on Public holidays in the Republic of China are not POV because they're practically ancient holidays based on the Chinese calendar. And additionally, who's to say that Armed Forces Day found in Holidays in Taiwan is not POV? If there's actually something I'm missing and there really is a big difference between the holidays in the two articles, then I still say merge them to Holidays in Taiwan but keep the two lists separate. But I don't see a real difference.
  • DON'T MERGE. Taiwan and Republic of China are not the same thing. That's like merging "Holidays of Colorado" with "Holidays of the United States." Furthermore, Taiwan has its own unique practices independent of those recognized by the Republic of China. You can't forget that the Republic of China is not only at present a political entity, but a historical entity as well. The dynamics of cultures in individual territories in Asia are unique enough to warrant separation. For example, people in Guangdong Province of Communist-controlled China have enough of a unique cultural identity to separate their holidays from the official ones. Taiwan is the same.   • Merge Merge together as "Public Holidays in the Republic of China (Taiwan)". It's no big deal. It's not like after we merge them together, then a pro-Taiwanese Independent supporter is going to lose an arm or something. The Republic of China and Taiwan [province/island/whatever] is one country; no matter what. Thus, merge. The world isn't going to end if they're merged.
