The town was created by the Russians because the Swedes sank barges to prevent Russians from getting by the river Daugava. The town of Kruspils was Polish. Therefor they offered no taxes, no draft and amnesty for all run away serfs who came there to haul freight. The old Believers came there for the work and amnesty as well.
