Spoken articles (GFDL)[edit]

In response to your question about reciting a list of authors along with the recording--I don't know. Did you post this for a central discussion somewhere? Is there a project page for speaking articles? (Forgive me if these are obvious--today on IRC is the first I heard of the project). Thanks! Demi T/C 09:00, 2005 Apr 13 (UTC)

Hi, Fuzheado. I'll write under the same heading as Demi because I'm referring to the same thing. :-) I just wanted to tell you that I have listened to your recording of Pulitzer Prize and found it remarkly well done. Thank you!

In reply to your message about Evolution.ogg:

  • Yes, thanks--it's easily done, actually. Any day now, when my upload finishes, an amplified version should be in place. Demi T/C 08:45, 2005 Apr 19 (UTC)

Ren & Stimpy Syndrome[edit]

Hi! The article titled Ren & Stimpy Syndrome has been on the vfd since March 30, 2005. Could you please delete this article? Marcus2 21:38, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I am asking for opinion about an article on VfD.

This article is about a secondary school in Sheung Wan. Since you teach at a place relatively close there (I'm not sure if HKU is close to Sheung Wan, but anyway.) I think you may have better knowledge about this school than most people voting on this mtter. SYSS Mouse 02:38, 16 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Spoken Wikipedia - missing copyleft notice[edit]

Hiya. Thanks loads again for recording Pulitzer Prize! However, as I'm sure you're aware, your recording is lacking a copyleft notice. I was wondering if I could persuade you to add it and upload the updated recording? I would be most grateful if you did. Thanks in advance! — Timwi 20:58, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I added a copyleft notice to it. --brian0918™ 16:02, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your excellent contributions to Spoken Wikipedia. Please read more for us! Do you do any special modifications to the file to get rid of the noise, or does it just sound perfect on the first try? --brian0918™ 16:02, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Unless you've already started recording, you might want to consider changing your choice to something longer. Chances are that the Adam Clayton Powell article will become unfeatured. --brian0918™ 17:03, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

His Holiness[edit]

Hi Fuz,

re your edit on Pope John Paul I. You may not know it but it is wikipedia policy to use styles like His Holiness on certain articles. All the papal articles use the HH style. You probably were unaware of this when you removed it but please do not remove it. It simply makes more work for wikipedia editors having to re-structure articles back to conform with the agreed manual of styles and naming conventions format. FearÉIREANN 12:01, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

American radio show about wikipedia[edit]

Hi

My name is Robin Amer and I’m a producer for an American public radio show called Open Source, which you can check out at www.radioopensource.org.

I’m writing you because this week we’re doing a show on Wikipedia including an interview with Jim Wales. We’re also looking for some particularly passionate and interesting Wikipedia users to talk to, especially users outside the US. I would love to talk to you about your involvement with the site. If you are interested, please give me a call at 617-497-8096, or email me at robinamer@riseup.net and send me your phone number.

Thanks so much.

Best, Robin Amer www.radioopensource.org

Hi there! I've been writing this article for some time, and now it turns out to be a pretty long entry from nearly nothing! Hope you can drop me some comment, and, if possible, make any improvement as you wish.

Thanks for your attention. Jerry Crimson Mann 21:43, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I think Wikipedia:Three-revert rule comes in handy here... if the two of you stop reverting each other, perhaps you could both cool off? -Harmil 15:41, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

This is obviously a legitimate dispute. ArbCom have been misbehaving for some time now. The worries editors may have about their own accounts being attacked for standing up to ArbCom are legitimate. Please stop vandalizing the discussion.
Whether they are swearing or not, deleting their comments is obviously not helping the situation. I suggest using strikethroughs if you wish.
If you delete their comments, you only prove their point that ArbCom and their lackeys are engaging in a coverup of abuse of power. Tony Sidaway seems to be hell-bent on proving this true with himself as the foremost example, and perhaps Calton as the secondary.
Re: User talk:Harmil#Vandal: The edits in question are not simple vandalism, IMHO. They are annoying, stubborn, harrassing personal attacks that are badly formatted, but that's the fine line between a vandal and a punk, isn't it...? I wasn't suggesting that he not be reverted, just that someone else should probably take the baton. It is, as the 3rr page points out, a show of community consensus. -Harmil 17:18, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
The edits Fuzheado is reverting count as vandalism as far I'm concerned, because of the expletives, the personal attacks, and the use of open proxies. SlimVirgin (talk) 17:25, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

Please stop vandalizing this discussion. You are only proving that ArbCom and the Admins are trying to cover up their behavior rather than operate in good faith. The language has been cleaned up with strikethroughs as fits recent policy on Personal Attacks.

Open proxies[edit]

Hi Fuzheado, the anon IPs you're blocking over the arbcom edits are open proxies, which should be blocked indefinitely. However, it takes a few minutes to check that they are, and if you block for seven days in the meantime, it means I have to undo your block before I can block indefinitely, because the shorter block takes precedence. It would be helpful if you could either hold off for the check to be made, or else block indefinitely, and I'll check them after you've done it, and will shorten any blocks that turn out not to be from open proxies (though they all have been so far). Cheers, SlimVirgin (talk) 16:46, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks Fuzheado. Put {{blocked proxy}} on their talk pages so we know at a glance which ones have been done, and give "open proxy" as the reason on the blocklog. SlimVirgin (talk) 16:51, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
Hi again, I'm wondering whether the block and blocklog tabs are visible to you on user and talk pages. I noticed you unblocked one of my indefinite blocks and then blocked it indefinitely again, which suggests you didn't check the blocklog before unblocking it (because there was no need). Maybe you didn't check it because you don't have it handy? I know when I first became an admin, I couldn't see these tabs on user pages, but someone installed them for me, and they make life a lot easier. Let me know and I can ask him to install for you if you don't have it already. When you go to a user or talk page, in the top righthand corner, next to the watch/unwatch tab, you should see block and blocklog. SlimVirgin (talk) 19:12, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

Block tabs[edit]

Fuzheado, I'm copying this out of my archive. This is what Knowledge Seeker sent me when he first set it up for me: "It's very simple to do in fact, and doesn't require you to do anything to your computer, only on Wikipedia ... you have to be using the (default) <monobook.css skin; if you've changed it in your preferences this won't work. So here's what you do: go to User:Korath/blockip.js (which is linked from User:Korath/Potentially useful stuff in case you want to find it again. Click to edit it, and copy the whole text. Then go to User:SlimVirgin/monobook.js, edit it, and paste the code in there. Save it and you're done! You'll have to do a full reload to clear your browser's cache, using control-shift-R. Otherwise, it'll be there when you restart your browser anyway ... Knowledge Seeker দ 23:38, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I tried substituting my name for yours as in User:Fuzheado/monobook.js, but it's coming up as a red link, so I don't know what you'd have to do instead; or perhaps you're using another skin. I've also left a note for Knowledge Seeker, so if the above isn't clear, you should ask him, as he's extremely helpful. Cheers, SlimVirgin (talk) 02:58, Jun 26, 2005 (UTC)

Hehe, thanks for the compliments, Slim! Especially since I hassled you so much about doing this! Yup, you're right; it's red because Fuzheado doesn't have custom JavaScript (neither did you or I before we put this up); once the page is created, it will turn blue. Fuzheado, let me know if you have any questions about how it works or how to do it. I've found Korath's tabs to be indispensable! — Knowledge Seeker 03:05, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)
You're welcome! I would like to publicize them more—I've done a bit by word of mouth but it would be nice to get the word out to more administrators. It was on WP:AN (or WP:AN/I) when Korath first developed them (in response to SlimVrigin and I having "block conflicts"); maybe I'll bring it up there again at some point or on the block page on the administrators' reading list or something. Unfortunately, no, I don't have any more tricks up my sleeve; if you hear of anything, let me know! — Knowledge Seeker 19:43, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)
You're welcome Fuzheado. See? I told you he was a sweetie. ;-) SlimVirgin (talk) 20:12, Jun 26, 2005 (UTC)

Deleting page content[edit]

Thanks, I accidently did it again and got a message from someone else about how it would be considered "Vandalism" to continue...Anyhow, forgive me for doing so.

The only reason I wiped the page out is because I don't know any other way to "edit" a page like that then to start with a clean slate...I'm used to working with programs like Dreamweaver, etc., and I don't like there being content already on something, so if I'm going to put something on a page, I like it to already be blank, so what's the big issue with wiping out this page? Unless you have any other suggestions with how to edit it? I thought the purpose of this "Your first page" thing was to have a page to write an article from scratch on?

Sorry for any problems this may have caused.

RE: Edititing[edit]

See, what I thought the purpose of "Your First Page" was to be able to do just what it implies- begin a page from scratch. I'm used to working with software that would enable you to do so, like Dreamweaver, for instance. So anyway, the reason I deleted the content of the "first page" was to be able to experiment with the tools and options and see what their immediate effects were. I figured that if this was a page generation program to be used within Wikipedia then it shouldn't be causing any problems, right? I also figured it was a personalized page until it was "published" or "finalized" or whatever you wanted to call it, so please explain whatever I'm not getting about that. But the point is, it says it's "Your First Page," so that's what I understand about it (since it says you can build your own article from the ground up, and that's what I want to do).

blocks[edit]

I have been hit with IP blocks set by you, reason given oly as "vandal". I am using AOL dial-up. I am not a vandal. Quite probably soemone else who got this IP on another occasion was. I sent you email with more details. DES 5 July 2005 03:55 (UTC)

Thanks for dealing with this. It seems to me that an IP block should be superceded for a logged in user by the block/nonblock status of that user. Is this possible? I suppsoe for sockpuppting you might not want this, but an annon vandal won't log in, and if he does, his login ID will be blocked soon enouhg. DES 5 July 2005 04:04 (UTC)

Re: an autounblocking, that's an intriguing idea. I'll have to think about whether it would work as a feature request. I could see that it would weaken the vandal fighting ability, because if there was an active vandal, someone logging in legitimately from the same proxy/IP would consistently unblock it, which would take away a crucial capability for the admins. Fuzheado | Talk 5 July 2005 04:15 (UTC)
Ideally, the block would not be removed, the software would simply run the decision tree:
  1. User Logged in?
    1. No: check IP (jump to 4 below)
    2. Yes: check for user blocks.
  2. User blocked?
    1. Yes: forbid Edit
    2. No: check for sock-puppet block on IP
  3. Sock-puppet block in place?
    1. Yes: forbid edit
    2. no: allow edit
  4. User not logged in
  5. IP block in place?
    1. Yes: forbid edit
    2. no: allow edit

I don't know if this is technically doable, but I think it is how things ought to work. DES 5 July 2005 04:31 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion/Proposal/3[edit]

PBurka pointed out that an important omission from this proposal: a band could meet WP:MUSIC criterion #5 (sharing a member with a famous band) and still be speedily deletable by this criterion. I've added a sentence to the proposal to reflect this: it now reads An article about a musician or music group that does not assert having released at least one album, nor having had media coverage, nor having a member that is or was also part of a well-known music group. If the assertion is disputed or controversial, it should be taken to VFD instead. Please consider if you support this new wording, and change your vote if not. Yours, Radiant_>|< July 5, 2005 09:55 (UTC)

I saw that you reverted some anon changes on User:NickBurns's user page; I think it was a case of "he got logged out and didn't know it" because the same anon has made previous changes that didn't smell like vandalism, and I think the most recent ones were probably legit. I'm going to re-revert to the anon changes and leave NickBurns a note to make sure he knows about the changes and to remind him to always log in. I wanted to give you a heads up, though, and say good catch on it. -- Essjay · Talk July 5, 2005 18:25 (UTC)

I figured that was the case; I just didn't want him to come back to his page and find changes and not know what happened. I felt like since you had made the revert, it was my responsibility to let you know I was "un-reverting" you. Obviously, you take the time to do RC patrol, and I felt like a blind "un-revert" without 1) a note saying I was going to do it, and 2) a note saying "thanks for your hard work" was bad form. You and all the other RC patrolers are appreciated, and you should be told that you are. -- Essjay · Talk July 6, 2005 05:23 (UTC)

Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum[edit]

Hi there, instead of making a redirect from the Japanese/Kanji names to this article, I created interwiki links in Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum. Take a look and see. I deleted the nonenglish article names since we don't really use them in WP. Thanks. Fuzheado | Talk 8 July 2005 05:26 (UTC)

Hey, back there. I would appreciate if you would rather not remove redirects I created. Afterall I made it for a reason. It is simply not the case that we don't really use them [nonenglish redirects] in WP. If you would take a look at articles about Japan, you can find that many, if not most, of these articles have the name of the article in English and redirects from the kanji writing. Some people even go as far as creating redirects from Japanese writings of titles for not-Japanese related articles (typical example: color, 色). While the latter goes too far, it makes sense for the Japanese articles. I fact, it is a general practice that many articles about non-English topics with an English-written title have redirects from the local writing. I could put here a long list of examples, but I think you get my point. Please don't delete this kind of redirects any more.
BTW, thanks for creating the interwikis. --Ben T/C July 9, 2005 04:46 (UTC)
Can you provide some examples? I just know from experience we don't have many kanji or Chinese character title names in English Wikipedia pointing to English articles, or at least it's not the standard practice. See and 日本, both are red links, they don't redirect to anything in en: Wikipedia. Or perhaps I'm misunderstanding your point. Fuzheado | Talk 9 July 2005 09:43 (UTC)
It looks as if you understood what I wanted to say. My examples didn't make much of an impression, though...
Well... examples. Looks as if some other people have been removing those redirects, too, for some mysterious reason (Many of 障子,障子,着物,着物,歌舞伎,浮世絵 have had a redirect). I am on a very slow connection, so it takes a lot of time to load pages and find kanji redirects. I provided of course many of my own articles about Japanese related topics with redirects (but I guess, this is not a good argument.) Except for that I found: 東京. Many other places in Japan had a redirect, but is has also been removed (e.g. 鎌倉奈良新宿京都北海道渋谷銀座沖縄関西大阪箱根.) Guess I don't make much of a case with my examples, if they are being removed. I think of it as in a way similar to the diacritics discussion, recently. I wonder, why people remove them, its not paper, right? If it is not practice now, it was practice some weeks ago - and it can become practice again. --Ben T/C 07:02, July 10, 2005 (UTC)
Yes, it's been pretty much policy for some time now (see Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(use_English) that article titles need to be at least in the Latin character set. With MediaWiki 1.5 software, you can have titles in Chinese or Japanese or whatever, but I'm afraid any addition in Chinese or Japanese characters will be wiped. But is this so bad? No one really looks for it here anyway, so folks will look it up in ja: or zh: and then wikilink over to English, right? Otherwise, en: will be full of Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, etc. and every language under the sky if we allow Chinese/Japanese characters here. Fuzheado | Talk 08:41, 10 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for providing the link to the policy. I have to admit you are right about what you said concerning the practice of non-English character links, I didn't know that and I was surprised to read alas the software doesn't won't allow "北京" as a title (and this seems to date back more than two years), because, until now, this kind of redirect has worked without a problem. I don't think it is so bad, but I thought it was elegant and comfortable to have redirects from local writings to English-titled articles. You might have problems with your keyboard (or windows) or just not know the Roman transliteration in some cases, so you type the non-English name of it and you get it anyway. I found that neat and consequent, considering the case with the diacritics. And I am sure to have one more title for each Korea/China/Japan/India/Russia/Thai etc. article won't blow it up. The space requirement is minimal. Whatever... I am not going to fight over it. Thanks for telling me, Fuzheado. Ben T/C 05:09, July 11, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip[edit]

As you suggest, it's a tough call, and I'm not sure whether I will cover it, and if so how. The situation is a challenge in terms of practicing responsible journalism. It's sort of newsworthy, but sort of uninteresting rehash of things that have happened before and will happen again. A case like this one, I wouldn't mind seeing the community start the ball rolling to show they want to see the story, kind of the way they did with the story on the London bombings article (which I would have covered anyway, of course). I guess I'll see how the rest of the week's news looks before I make up my mind. --Michael Snow 03:55, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Unicode for EasyTimeline[edit]

Hi Andrew, I made major changes in EasyTimeline and some in Ploticus (rendering package) before Wikimania, tested it all succesfully under Cygwin, and are now waiting for someone to build Linux version of Ploticus. I have an offer for that so will pursue this soon. But generally I have to slow down a bit as my RSI is bothering me again, after 5 years of relative absence. But it is on my shortlist for sure. Coulter page firing up again[edit]

The Coulter page is likely to erupt in another edit war. I would appreciate it if you could keep your eye on it. Thanks. klenk 08:39, 2 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Tsk tsk, you should let others edit :P. How did you know it was Esquire actually, did you fish that in my edits? A cruise...YES! this is it, let's do a cruise! Why the Mediterranean and not the Carribeans? notafish }<';> 07:59, 21 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese article[edit]

Hi. I heard you can read chinese, and I was wondering if you'd be willing to help me out. While RC patrolling I stumbled across some information about penis replacement surgery in the Penis article. However, I'm a little skeptical of it, and I was wondering if you'd be willing to confirm that the information in theis chinese reference article verifies the added information? If you can't or don't want to, that's completely understandable. Thanks. -- BMIComp (talk, HOWS MY DRIVING) 03:08, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Esquire[edit]

Re: "...serious and scholarly" -- thanks :-)

Actually, I'm finding that editing the article is quite refreshing. I hope you're having a lot of fun editing it too! :D

By the way, do you know of a way to reliably check the word count? --HappyCamper 01:14, 23 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't protect it, Fuzheado, I merely noted that Jimbo had. He's one who said "the end"<g>. - Nunh-huh 05:05, 23 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures uploaded by your students[edit]

Hello Fuzheado I'd like to know if you're keeping a list of user names of your students in Wikipedia? Some great pictures uploaded by users like user:78kachiu are being deleted [1] because they contain no copyright information. Is it possible to contact them and remind them to tag the images? Thanks. — Instantnood 14:51, 7 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your contribution at 2005 Kashmir earthquake. Please keep it up!!!Pradeepsomani (talk)

please check out our page, someone CHEATS!!![edit]

i am working in "Far Eastern Economic Review", recently i discover someone in my group who is a mass-entry-person does not write any "edited summary" and when i check her entries and compare them, i see no differences (also alot of slight difference like changing a single letter without pressing "m") . however she very frequently clicking on the edit bottom, i guess probably to show an impression that she is over-whelmingly involving in all the big contribution, which is a lie. it does affect morale of our group and i guess lies to groupmates do really hurt.

hope our instructor can kindly check this out and help us

Where are you... :([edit]

We needed you for the Wikimania meeting, and I haven't heard from you. notafish }<';> 16:57, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Peer review/Yuan (surname)[edit]

If you have a minute, could you take a look at the article Yuan (surname) - I've put it up for peer review (see Wikipedia:Peer review/Yuan (surname)/archive1). I hope to make it a model for expanding other Chinese surname articles. Since you've contributed to the Chinese surname article, I would really appreciate your suggestions.
