Untitled[edit]

This page needs a lot of work. Are the Kaw the same as the Kansa? -- Zoe

Who was Curtis?[edit]

The Curtis Act in 1898 expanded the powers of the federal government over American Indian affairs. An act of congress in 1902 disbanded the Kaw tribe as a legal entity. This act transferred 160 acres (0.6 km²) to the federal government and about 1,625 acres (6.6 km²) of Kaw land to Curtis and his children.

Umm...who was Curtis? Later Vice President Charles Curtis, or someone else? -- Ray Chason 13:41, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, three years after you asked the question, yes, it was Charles Curtis. He was a progressive and advocated assimilation. -Uyvsdi (talk) 00:31, 23 June 2009 (UTC)Uyvsdi[reply]

Pronunciation of Kaw?[edit]

Does anyone know if it's pronounced /kɔ/ or /kaw/? Might be useful to annotate that. babbage (talk) 22:32, 22 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"/kaw/", like a raven's caw :) -Uyvsdi (talk) 00:39, 23 June 2009 (UTC)Uyvsdi[reply]
Wait, so like raven's caw, and not like the cow in "milk from a cow"? babbage (talk) 02:58, 23 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No, nothing like cow. Sorry, I'm not up on phonetic alphabets. Kaw, rhyming with law or baah or Jah.-Uyvsdi (talk) 03:36, 23 June 2009 (UTC)Uyvsdi[reply]

Requested move[edit]

The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: no consensus The articles was moved by Kwamikagami to Kaw people befoer the discussion was closed. If any participating parties find this name unacceptable please let me know. Labattblueboy (talk) 20:11, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Kaw (tribe)Kaw Nation — Kaw Nation is the actual name of the tribe (there is only one Kaw tribe). The move would also eliminate parentheses. Relisted. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 14:04, 24 October 2010 (UTC) -Uyvsdi (talk) 03:33, 14 October 2010 (UTC)Uyvsdi[reply]

Oppose, as afar as I have been able to see, the other Indian tribes: Apache, Sioux, Cherokee, etc don't use the word 'nation'. The problem with this article is that the name Kaw has several meanings. The present name is fine. Flamarande (talk) 11:37, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Suport. After reading the tribes web site, I can see no reason to not use what the tribe uses which is Kaw Nation. In addition we should only use parenthetical disambiguation when no good name is available that would not require disambiguation. In this case such a name exists and has been proposed. WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is not a reason to keep an article at a bad name. Vegaswikian (talk) 19:07, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose: Massively ambiguous. The tendency towards acceptance of tendentious names because they are "official" or, claimed by an organization, is destructive of communication. The Kaw existed - and were so called - before they had encountered Latin, or indeed, French. As a compromise, Kaw (nation) would be worth considering. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 02:53, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - would not fit in with the titles any other articles about tribes or peoples, per Flamarande above.  — Amakuru (talk) 06:50, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • oppose Best would be Kaw, but the word has too many other meanings, so I prefer "Kaw Indians" as a title. It's clear and traditional. Second choice would be "Kaw people" which is less clear because the title doesnt suggest any geographic location. (There is also a Kaw ethnic group living in SE Asia.) Last choice would be Kaw Nation. Smallchief 01:29, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

basic introduction OK, has good formatting; separate language article needed --Skookum1 (12 May 06)
  • It's not strictly a stub, but don't know that it's quite to a Start Class yet. I dunno. But I'm rating it a stub rather than Skookum's start. --Miskwito 23:54, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
