Untitled[edit]

Two dialectical variants of the Inuit Ijiraq, with the J pronounced either as in Danish or as in English. Anglicized with the accent on the first syllable: [EE-yuh-ruck] or [IDGE-uh-ruck].

follow up[edit]

Heard back from Michael Kusugak, who proposed the name. NASA had given the pronunciation as "ee-gee-RAK" in a press release, with the accent messed up (which happens surprisingly often). Michael said,

"You are right about the accents. Kiviuq is pronounced Ki' vi uq (kee' vee oq, the q is gutteral, pronounced in the back of the tongue). Paw' lee ahq, See' ar nahq and Ee' ye rahq."

I'd imagine that for many English speakers, "EE yuh rahk" might be an easier pronunciation. kwami 06:00, 14 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Having heard inuits speak, I cannot imagine how this could be pronounced with anything else than a true J (e.g. "Ee-djee-rack"). I'm 99% sure the "yuh" is dead wrong.

Well, I don't know the language myself, but evidently this is a matter of dialectical variation. I'll take Michael's word for it that he at least pronounces Inuit J something like an English Y. Ijiraq is also an Inuit family name, and as such, it is often given the more Anglicized spelling "Iyerak". Of course, given the variation, an English J "spelling pronunciation" wouldn't be wrong, and would be more accessible to Anglophones. kwami 10:04, 4 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Spoken Wikipedia recording[edit]

I've just uploaded an audio recording of the article. Please let me know if I've mispronounced anything. :-) --Mangst (talk) 20:03, 6 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
