"Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu" Section[edit]

A lot of the material you added was copied from the source you gave (http://rickson.com/history/rickson.htm), which is a copyright violation. I've removed the material. Also, Rickson's official page isn't a reliable source for claims likely to be disputed, so remember to only cite his website for totally uncontroversial issues. Greatest Jiujiutsu Practitioner in the World[edit]

I'm surprised there isn't any information here about his talents at jiujiutsu. While his record as an MMA fighter is disputable what isn't is the fact that just about every person of any significant talent who has rolled with Rickson refers to him in glowing terms. I would edit the entry myself except I don't have the sources to back it up just yet.

400-0 record[edit]

Doesn't he have a documented loss in a Sambo tournament? Besides, your edit is better than the original, but the main article still references it. 24-June-05 The 400-0 is almost certainly false. The real controversy is who created this myth - Rickson himself or his fanboys. Helio is own father said the 400-0 record is hogwash. http://bjj.org/interviews/rickson-97-11.html has Rickson giving an excuse on why he lost a sambo match.

Helio didn't say its hogwash only that he didn't consider them real "fights". Some are even street fights like against Hugo Duarte on the beach or Rickson vs Judo legend Hayward Nishioka in a dojo fight. But those fights are as real as they can get.Sage99 16:06, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rickson lost a Sambo tournament cleanly to a gentleman called Ron Tripp.

As Hayward Nishioka has been mentioned, I would like to point out that the limited video content publically available of the encounter, appears to suggest that it most likely occurred as a means for evaluation or the necessity to "measure" Rickson and Royler's technical ability with Nishioka's as opposed to a meaningful competitive battle between technicians. That said in terms of perhaps what Nishioka understood about the encounter as he openly critiques both Royler's and Rickson's strengths and techniques at one point in the video. A competitive battle would indicate something other than a formative process and the sparring between these practitioners, as a result of Nishioka’s commentary with Rorion, appears to be formative and not combative. As for precisely what the video evidence wished to project, may be entirely another matter especially in terms of the other comments above and Rorion’s intentions in terms of recording the encounter.

MMA record[edit]

Currently the MMA record is taken from Sherdog.com, which includes the (first) match against Zulu. This, however, is described as an "independent event", ie. basically a challenge match between two individuals. If this is counted as part of the record, one should also count the rematch between the two fighters, as well as, potentially, any other opponents Rickson faced in non-professional events. Yet many other MMA fighters, including Rickson's brothers such as Royce, have also fought in challenge matches, some of which have been recorded on video as well, but these are currently not being counted -- by the logic above, shouldn't those private matches be counted as well? Not really a 'challenge match', or 'non professional'. It was a stadium with lots of spectators, and was televised for the 'Vale-Tudo' TV show. Parts of the tape can be found on Google Video. Relationship to Kyra[edit]

This sentence needs to be sourced. The reason I say this is because there have been rumors about Rickson coming out of retirement for 6 years! Why should we believe it now when it has turned out to be false on so many occations?

In the last few months, I've seen mentions of it -- a verbal agreement between Rickson and Sakuraba. However, the author of that did pointedly put "Rumours." As a result, I vote to keep it in there for now and simply keep our eyes open for further information. -- Dan N.

Shark Fight Promotions, a Texas based MMA promotion company has been in talks with both Rickson Gracie and Kazushi Sakuraba about a possible fight late in 2009. I don't know what you people expect. For one, I would think that multitudes of witness accounts would be enough to verify the supposedly "disputed" records. For two, a lot of his achievements came from times and places where information was not diligently recorded, which means there aren't any sources to find. You can't just ignore it or say it didn't happen just because there are recorded independent sources; the multitudes of witness accounts should be enough since there's nothing better to go on. - Brandon Harwell, 4 Oct 2007


I think we have to be very careful (or skeptical) about using the gracie website as a source of Rickson's achievements. there are no other sources that indicate this. the idea that he was an openweight champion in 2 division (what organisation)for near two decades is news to me and highlight dubious. his BJJ technique is not arguable.

Like a lot of Rickson's story, too much is unsubstantiated. Of the 13 references we have on his page, 7 are directly from the gracies; 3 are just fight finder on sherdog; 2 are critical and independent sources/opinion and 1 is a story that doesn't open for me. while I accept it has been cleaned up somewhat, the lack of other sources leads me to recommend we remove some 'facts'.

Brandon above; who are these eye witnesses as from my experience they tend to be gracies or gracie students. There are too many previous MAs who claimed to be undefeated. its a legacy of the past when facts were more difficult to verify.

Are you a spam bot? And it would be hard for Dickson to have horrific losses like most mma fighters when he went his entire career refusing to fight anyone good....respect it!

Quotes[edit]

Since there is so much doubt surrounding Rickson's history, etc, I think it is a good idea to assemble a list of quotes from various respected MMA fighters. They don't have to be positive (or negative) they just have to be sourced. I had this idea today while reading an article about Mark Schultz. This is one way that we can give readers an idea of Rickson as an athlete, MMA fighter and submission grappler without needing to source the fights that are not sourceable. Belt ranking?[edit]

Seems like someone is playing around with Rickson's BJJ belt ranking. If someone can add a proper citation to him having a belt rank higher than 7th degree black & red, I'd like to see it. For now I've changed his belt ranking back to 7th degree, and added an additional citation verifying such. top fighters[edit]

Nobuhiko Takada was previously listed in the article as being Japan's "top fighter". He was nothing of the sort. He was a professional wrestler who drifted into MMA. His 3-6-2 career statistics say it all. JuJitsu and MMA Fight Record[edit]

I've moved this whole section to talk for the following reasons:

  1. there's no references to substantiate any of it
  2. WP:UNDUE - casual training matches aren't "recorded victories" for any other martial artist I'm aware of. Recording them here gives the far too much weight.
  3. WP:RS - as far as I can tell, almost all of these "victories" are sourced from Gracie's own site. If they are significant and important, they should be recorded elsewhere. As it stands, I can only see it serving to inflate his already bloated article.

I could go on, but I believe that's enough justification for the moment. If something in this section is significant enough and can be properly sourced, I'll happily agree to move it back to the article.

9th dan promotion[edit]

A recent edit was made, suggesting that Gracie has been promoted to 9th dan. I can find no evidence of this. As per WP:BURDEN, I've reverted it. Removed content re: being ranked in Judo and Sambo[edit]

After spending a solid 2+ hours searching for anything to help substantiate these rankings, I came up 100% dry. This coupled with the fact that this has been tagged as needing citation for at least 2 years, I decided to removed this content.
