Mathematical sciences[edit]

Should Category:Mathematics be a parent category of Category:Mathematical sciences? (Category:Mathematics currently has a subcategory Category:Mathematical science occupations‎). Brad7777 (talk) 15:56, 6 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Note that Category:Mathematical sciences is now found at Category:Applied mathematics (the former is a soft-redirect to the latter), which is a subcat of Category:Fields of mathematics. - dcljr (talk) 12:16, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

debate on the categories of mathematics and abstraction[edit]

I am creating this topic to debate about a change canceled by @Dcljr: : I had removed the abstraction category but @Dcljr: does not agree. It therefore seems necessary to me to continue the discussion initiated by Dcljr during its modification in order to reach a compromise. Of course everyone can participate. Dcljr, you think "categories are not intended to be a perfect summation of the nature of a topic" but I disagree. On the contrary, I think that we cannot put categories that do not have inseparable links with the subject. I understand that mathematics requires abstraction but to say that mathematics is a subcategory of abstraction I do not agree. Plus it can create fancy category trees. Consider that with mathematics in the sub-category of abstraction, that gives mathematics under the tree of ontology and politics ... A compromise may be to remove certain categories from the abstraction category. We could also put abstraction in a sub-category of mathematics, since it is true that abstraction is a notion used in mathematics. I look forward to your opinions on my proposals! I've undone my undoing of your edit. People can discuss this, if they'd like, but I've decided I have no objection to your change, after all. As for putting cat:Abstraction under cat:Mathematics, I don't think that would work. By your own logic, that would bring in an awful lot of unrelated stuff under the umbrella of mathematics. - dcljr (talk) 12:13, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
