Groups might also mean river system or harbour.

Geography project[edit]

I plan on working my way through Australian geography, although it may take some time. I've started by trying to build a comprehensive list of NSW islands. I'll then expand the resulting stubs. Then I'll move on to another state. When I'm done with islands I'll move to another feature. Apologies in advance for the number of stubs. I promise they'll be temporary.

South Australia[edit]

Reason for Prod, abandoning this list as a viable reference point[edit]

  1. There are too many islands to list (viz the summary by pdfpdf re the 8,222 islands)
  2. there is no criterion for inclusion, as a consequence there is no indicator as to why islands are listed here, opening the potential for a range of poor editing decisions as to what is to be included, or not
  3. as it is poorly maintained and has no specific guidelines for inclusion the room for undue emphasis between states
  4. as a dismabig page/redirect, it is then to the states for smaller scope and potential for clearer inclusion criteria
  5. most state projects have inadequate coastal regionalisation articles/lists, (the imra simply complicates it further), this change may be a wake up call for better delineation of coastal region definition

Goodness gracious! It seems that perhaps I should consider the consequences of some of my "throw-away" comments? Well, here goes! (Please rip them to shreds if you have better options and/or solutions.)
  • I believe this page should exist, but like Sats and Bduke, I think it should be defined just what this page is about, and just what this page should contain.
  • I'm fairly confident that everyone agrees that a page containing a list of 8,000+ island names is ... "not a good idea".
  • Personally, I'm not altogether sure what this page should contain.
    • Regarding WA, I'm prepared to argue that "Island Groups" and Largest/"Most significant" is a good solution
    • Regarding Qld, the current list is (un-necessarily and un-usefully) far too large.
    • Regarding other states (and territories) I have insufficient knowledge to express useful opinions.
In general, I would like to think that my WA solution of "Island Groups" and Largest/"Most significant" islands would/will generalize to cover all regions, (but as I said, I have insufficient knowledge).
And yes, I also think that a tree-like structure with the second level being the states and territories is the best option.

Notability is simple. As far a list is concerned, an island is notable if it has an article. That puts the notability discussion over to the article on the island. If the article gets deleted, we remove the island from the list. --Bduke (Discussion) 20:41, 5 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Tasmania[edit]

I agree. Unfortunately from what I can find, there isn't a term or name for the part of Tasmania which is not King Island, Flinders Island, Macquarie Island, Bruny Island, etc. apart from "Tasmanian mainland". -- Chuq (talk) 10:47, 20 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Mainland Australia[edit]

Is Mainland Australia considered an island? A continent? Just a landmass of unspecified type? Perhaps a sentence clarifying Mainland Australia's status could help people who come to this page wondering about its status, whether it has its own name, etc. Pdxuser (talk) 01:30, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

My take: Mainland Australia is the largest island within the continent of Australia. There is often confusion on this point born out of the belief that Mainland Australia is the same as the continent of Australia, and that since islands are smaller than continents, it can't be an island. But Mainland Australia is smaller than the continent and completely surrounded by water, making it an island. Pdxuser (talk) 02:07, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
