Trainer[edit]

I note this article doesn't mention his trainer (in the early years before they split), Barney Eastwood. Should it? Dbiv 02:10, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Why not? I remember Eastwood. Besides, with that last name.....he he, you know, like a certain spaguetti and action movie hero named Clint.....I just wasnt sure whether Eastwood was Barry's manager, trainer or promoter. "Antonio in every corner Martin"

It is quite remarkable that McGuigan's manager was not mentioned, almost as if he'd been omitted deliberately. That has now been rectified, with a reference Billsmith60 (talk) 15:24, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Adrian Dunbar[edit]

in the article its states that Adrian Dunbar is a protestant, I'm not sure that this is true. I dont want to change it yet as he possibly however, I dont think he actually is - can anyone confirm? "User:Vintagekits"

For users outside Northern Ireland and the border counties of the Republic -- obsessing over people's religious denomination is a fraught exercise, especially when the people in question have made a conscious effort to transcend sectarianism, as McGuigan has worked hard to do. There's an ugly WP tendency to slap a "Religiousdenomination Sportsperson" category on everyone in sight, and doing so in this context may have implications that you don't fully understand. I for one am fed up with every person on Wiki being attributed to the Catholic faith, they may be Catholic by virtue of their upbringing but why is this information relevant? I mean if religion is not part of their work, fundraising or other activity that makes them notable why is it there? VinDibs (talk) 11:29, 26 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sentence[edit]

- "During most of his career, McGuigan divided his fights between Northern Ireland, Ireland and England." - "During most of his career, McGuigan divided his fights between Ireland, north and south and England." - "During most of his career, McGuigan divided his fights between the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and England."

To be honest none of these sentences look good. Surely "between Ireland and England" would be best, linking to the island of Ireland?

What does anyone else think?m (Derry Boi 13:07, 20 September 2006 (UTC))[reply]

  • I don't see the neccessity for having the line at all. I suggest leaving it blank as the article mentions where his main fights are, no need for a points scoring exercise IMO Dodge 13:38, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Eubank, Eubanks or not true?[edit]

Quote:-

- "After another win, he suffered his first setback, losing a hotly disputed decision (which had him in tears) to Peter Eubanks (brother of Chris Eubank) over eight rounds at Wembley, England.."

Am also 99% certain Benard Taylor's Corner threw in the towel as the bell sounded for the end of the 6th round. 82.1.171.65 (talk) 16:46, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Year of birth[edit]

The infobox and the first line state 1960; the 1961 births category is present. Nietzsche 2 (talk) 15:30, 21 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No references[edit]

Hi all, the following had no references so I've taken it out of the article.

  • McGuigan earned promotional deals such as a video game named Barry McGuigan Boxing, which won critical acclaim (awarded a "Sizzler!" in Zzap64).
  • In 1986 the Irish comedian Dermot Morgan had a number one chart hit in Ireland with his song Thank you very much Mr Eastwood, sending up McGuigan's habit of thanking his manager profusely after every fight.
  • McGuigan is serving as the coach for the UK team on the show, The Contender Challenge: UK vs. USA.
  • Referenced in a line of the song "Murda" by UK hip-hop artist Klashnekoff
  • Was referenced in Barry McGuigan's Unofficial Mars Bar Chart, run from 1993-1994
  • McGuigan was also the face of Barry's Jabs (nettle flavoured crisps) which were only available in Northern Ireland for a short period.

Added to the fact that this was in a "trivia" section when some of this material doesn't look trivial, if references can be found please reincorporate the material into the article. - Tbsdy lives (formerly Ta bu shi da yu) talk 05:36, 13 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Heresay[edit]

How is a guy from the same place adopting a nickname encompassing that place be a tribute to someone else? Don't be daft.

" More recently, fellow Clones native and boxer Kevin McBride has honoured McGuigan by adopting the nickname The Clones Colossus. "

He didn't adopt Cyclone, McGuigan's former nickname. So how is this a tribute?

I'm going to remove this. If I were a boxer and I was known as The London Hammer if someone called his self The London Haddock it would not be taken as a tribute.

Motor Racing[edit]

I have an old motor racing video in which Murray Walker says "and that's Barry McGuigan rolling! [the car] I bet he wishes he'd stayed in the ring!" Does anyone have ay references to his motorsport activities - could feasibly be a joke referring to someone else with the same name.--MartinUK (talk) 11:43, 9 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
