Clout[edit]

Thank you

Thanks and EGF[edit]

Thanks for your support of my Adminship nomiantion. Also, I saw epidermal-derived growth factor on vfd, techincally it is just epidermal growth factor, the information on the receptor may warrant a seperate article on the EGF receptor, but I would tend toward keeping the hormone and receptor in one article for now--nixie 02:38, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Do you know who[edit]

Codes wikipedia? I am thinking of using the number of edits as a median to determine ranking. I want to know if it is feasable to generate a dynamic wikipedia page for users who want to be ranked. --Cool Cat My Talk 04:27, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Head template[edit]

You are using my old code, I improved it greatly ;) Infact you are welcome to use my template if you like, I welcome any suggestions :) --Cool Cat My Talk 04:28, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Template[edit]

Well, I dont care too much about news (editwise) either, but it keeps you up to date so one isnt too terribly ignorant. You can delete the news part if you like :). By the way what do you think of the red box and my new user page? --Cool Cat My Talk 07:24, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Fact of the Day...[edit]

My greatest work has been completed!!![edit]

I finished the archival bot. It was no easy task. But it is done. I will let you check over the contributions first before I schedule it to run every certain amount of specified days. -- AllyUnion (talk) 02:38, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Nevermind... still has bugs. -- AllyUnion (talk) 03:14, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

my status/development box[edit]

Thanks for your comments at User talk:Violetriga/statusdevelopment. It's now been implemented using an example set of templates - would be great if you took a second look. Cheers, violet/riga (t) 16:14, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

While a top and bottom to the box would look good, I think that it would further complicate things. With the way I've tried to do it I'm hoping that it would be both backwards compatible and not require any changes to the existing systems: to highlight something as a FAC you would still just add {{fac}}, for example. Talk:Automatic number plate recognition is:
{{oldpeerreview}}
{{featured}}
{{iwc1-nom}}
To change to the new system would just require the templates updated and the first two to be swapped around (though even that is a minor aesthetic point). violet/riga (t) 16:40, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

DYK[edit]

I will try to do that. I noticed the upcoming DYK pool was sorta dry, so I went and looked a couple of times, and didn't see anything much that I wanted to work with. That is why I dusted off a couple of items I had on hold. Yours in Richmond, Mark Vaoverland 22:12, Apr 9, 2005 (UTC)

Two months ago, you previously deleted thats hot after consensus to do so on VFD. Since there was a spelling error in the title, I didn't know that article had been done until I created my own that's hot, which is much more cleaned-up than the other article (it's wikified, concise, and has four sources). I want to know what you think of it. About notability, I received over 900,000 hits by searching the terms "that's hot Paris Hilton." Mike H 10:59, Apr 10, 2005 (UTC)

DYK[edit]

I went through the newest articles but couldn't find anything interesting enough for me to write or even condense a blurb for DYK. I did work up a couple of new ones with some non-US content however. Yours in Richmond, Mark. Vaoverland 20:21, Apr 10, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. Ancient Egypt is not my field but as it happens I know someone who has studied it and I'll see what she says. --Tony Sidaway|Talk 11:06, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Someone is deleting this as fast as I can bring it back, who is deleting it and why not bother leave a msg to discussion or the author, there is no reason to have alergy against templates. --Cool Cat My Talk 17:15, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Templates[edit]

By definition are used in multiple articles. That template was used in 2 articles before it was deleted. Both Kurds and Kurdistan need that. Also History of the kurds, and basicaly anything related to kurds probably needs it, as anything kurd related is more than likely to mention kurdistan at a point. Topic is rather boring I think. --Cool Cat My Talk 22:06, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I do not understand the alergy towards templates. No harm was done, no info was removed. See how I used templates in Ranks and insignia of Starfleet and Ranks and Insignia of NATO. Ranks of NATO officers, starfleet officers are unlikely to change. If any article related to Belgian Army, ranks are avalible for display with one simlple template. I am an engineer, I try to do more with less. :) I do not understand what my "bad" conduct is. I do not appriciate the fact that my templates get deleted lightning fast and me not notified. Based on what concensius are they deleted is what it gets me. Files became orphan because someone reverted the article, was trying to be productive I believe. --Cool Cat My Talk 22:11, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Kurds are a very fragile topic, should be aproached with care, just like many other Turkey related material. I Search and destroy pov. I introduce govermental data. If I introduced POV people are welcome to discuss, I do not welcome all my edits on pages including spelling corrections be reverted , but you know that. --Cool Cat My Talk 22:06, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

This is what I think. What do you think? --Cool Cat My Talk 22:11, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Question[edit]

Hi, I don't know how to put a link to my contributions on my user page. I didn't know who to ask, so I picked you. Howabout1 03:08, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)

You're welcome[edit]

It was my pleasure. As vandalism goes, it was somewhat odd, but then again there is much I don't understand. — Knowledge Seeker 07:50, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thanks[edit]

Thanks for resizing the photo. Can I get a link to where I can learn how to do it?

Aplogies[edit]

Now that I have used Wikipedia for a few days I am beginning to see the process in action and am liking it more each day. I do believe this is the best possible solution for the problem at hand, I just didn't understand some things when I started reading deletions. i.e. Some obscure American Idol contestant entry was allowed to stand, but an entry about a historical figure in Women's history was being deleted. However, I do think this system comes to the best resolution 90% of the time and pop culture will erase itself eventually...

Survey help[edit]

Hi! Thanks for the offer of help with my survey. If I can find your MSN username, I'll be sure to try to catch you sometime. Should be all ready to do it either late this week, or early next. Thanks again! — PMcM 20:31, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)

(Just got your survey results, with e-mail/MSN details.) — PMcM 20:34, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hello again! I've been looking out for you on MSN, but I don't think I've managed to be online at a time when you also are. I'm usually online from around 1300 UTC to 0000 UTC. Possibly there is some technical problem (like one of us having our block list set or something) which is getting in the way? If you could possibly contact me either through my talk page, or e-mail, we can hopefully sort something out. Thanks. — PMcM 22:28, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Unfortunately I can't help, as I don't know any more about them than is in the article (which I didn't start). Deb 11:52, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)

170.158.96.99's block[edit]

I noticed on the talk page that 170.158.96.99 was blocked sometime around 21 March. You didn't mention how long the block was, but a quick check of the contributions shows two edits in the last two weeks, both of which were vandalism. Either this user is violating the block, or has simply continued old habits. —chris.lawson (talk) 17:33, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I have an update on this user if you're willing to handle the admin portion of re-blocking it. I've been in dialogue via e-mail with the maintainer of the netblock, and he's given his approval to extend the block on this IP through 25 April. I've got the e-mails if you'd like to contact me privately, or I can post them here. —chris.lawson (talk) 01:30, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Signpost and featured articles[edit]

If you'd like to take a regular beat and write about new featured article and featured picture candidates, that would be wonderful. You could even start this week if you like, because the last few weeks my efforts to cover that area have been limited by time constraints.

To answer your question, yes, I did get the list of promotions straight from Goings-on. Unless there's a particular news item (like the 500 mark, or the 17-in-a-week record), I try to pick one or two nominations that would be the most interesting to write about, then briefly mention the rest of the promotions. The ones you focus on might not always be successful candidates — stuff that doesn't get promoted sometimes gives you more interesting material.

While I'm gone, I've asked User:Sj to be the guest editor. For his benefit, and because as more people get involved more organization is needed, we're asking reporters to get stories in by midnight UTC on Saturdays. They don't need to be completely polished, and they can and should be updated if more things happen on Sunday (like additional promotions), but we'd like to have the basic elements of the story by then. We have a newsroom set up for The Signpost now to help coordinate this.

Thanks for your help on this project, both past and future. --Michael Snow 06:10, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I'll leave this here, because it's semi on topic. Yes, it is quite unfortunate there are so many unreferenced, but I doubt any of it is because newbies edited them out in error. Primarily the issue is references weren't a FA requirement before September 2004 or so, so many before that were just written from the editor's knowledge. While I certainly don't mind writing the draft, I'd like to stay away from self promotion. I'll put up something about the facts and what is going on and someone can edit it up a bit. Thanks - Taxman 15:59, Apr 27, 2005 (UTC)

Yes, I can do that. - Taxman 12:35, Apr 29, 2005 (UTC)
Ok, sorry, a little late, but a draft is now at User:Taxman/Featured article referencing. I guess it should just be added as a tidbit along with the rest of the coverage on FA's. Thanks - Taxman 14:50, Apr 30, 2005 (UTC)

A Quick Hello[edit]

A Quick Hello to the jewel who makes this Wiki-Wacky place worth visiting. I've been out of the loop for the time being because Fadix is too committed to keep up with; he now has allies, and apparent clear sailing. However, I did leave a response on the following Talk page, if you're feeling masochistic. Best to you, --Torque April 13, 2005

Olympiade[edit]

Hi, Mgm. Since you can speak Dutch, can you look at the Olympiade article, I thought it looked like a dump of text from a book and slapped on a {{delete}}-tag, but maybe an {{untranslated}} would be more in order. Sjakkalle 11:47, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Signpost article about template standardisation[edit]

I've had a go at a signpost article (here) and tried to represent it in as NPOV a way as possible. Obviously it would be best if you could take a look and see what you think of it before it's suggested for inclusion, or if you'd like to invite JDG to run through it then that would be fine with me. Cheers, violet/riga (t) 12:56, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

You're more than welcome to do whatever you wish to the write-up - I know there are some bits missing, and have probably written it with some bias. violet/riga (t) 20:18, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

DYK Script... complete![edit]

I think I got rid of all the bugs. Please check the bot's contributions to see if everything went okay. I checked it, and it seemed fine. Now, the only question left is how often do you want this to run? Every day, every week, every month? -- AllyUnion (talk) 13:15, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Oops. I'm glad you caught that last minor bug. -- AllyUnion (talk) 21:54, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Okay, just to let you know what the bot is looking for:

  1. On Template talk:Did you know:
    • Find the text: "===ARCHIVE USED SUGGESTIONS HERE==="
    • Process did you know lines. Where a Did you know line is the text from "*...that" to the next "*...that". If it can't find another "*...that", check if it has reached the ending search text.
    • Stop processing did you know lines until it reachs this text: "'''All older items have been archived at [[Wikipedia:Recent additions]]. Please check the [[Wikipedia talk:Did you know/ItemArchive 1|item archive]] to help check if other items are archived at "Recent Additions" or one of its archives as well.'''"
  2. On Wikipedia:Recent additions:
    • Find the first "<!-- newly archived items should go in at the top -->"
    • Stop processing until the second "<!-- newly archived items should go in at the top -->"
  3. On an archive page like, Wikipedia:Recent additions 25, skip the first four lines, which will have the two header templates, a new blank line and the section title.

So, to answer your question whether or not comment lines will screw up the bot, not really. If it fails to find the start and stop, then it will screw up horribly. -- AllyUnion (talk) 22:24, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Please protect images when adding them to DYK[edit]

Hi there. I noticed that you added an image to Template:Did you know. Please protect images that you add there to avoid vandalism. Thanks! -Frazzydee| 20:23, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your response :) No problem, just a friendly reminder so that we can avoid autofellatio and penis pics on the main page ;) I didn't unprotect the old one, so I'll go do that now. Thanks for reminding me. -Frazzydee| 20:30, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your comment. I have seen the same thing you have, and can assure you that it is not my intention to have black on black. The problem may be related to current loading of the server, but the few times I saw this while working on the set of templates hitting the reload button corrected this issue. --Allen3 talk 21:40, Apr 14, 2005 (UTC)

A user has accused me of being another user. I don't know the history of all this, but would like to disprove his claim and put him in his place. This is just outlandish. I didn't even know Radicalsubversive had written such things about me! There is one Wikipedia - read one - account on my computer. Wikipedia staff can come and check at any time or talk to me directly about it. For the record I am not Ger6.2C, Nulla, or anyone else. I am Lagavulin, a nom de plume admittedly but I would be happy to give my full name, contact details and even arrange a time to inspect my PC to Wikipedia staff. Can't do much better than that. Uh, actually the anon was me, somehow I got logged out while working on that one. My features[edit]

Hi Mgm - before Eldfell, I'd successfully seen two articles through all the way from creation to featured, and 6 others to featured from stub-ness, they're all listed on my user page. I also wrote a large proportion of Lord Dufferin, which is also featured. Worldtraveller 14:40, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)

TV[edit]

Thanks v much for updating my rather vain notice of next TV appearance! Have to say I was disappointed that we didn't get the San Serriffe question as well, as well as a couple of others, one about the Great Auk which I totally knew but I was being too cautious on the buzzer. Still, like the great Fangio once said, the aim is to win by the least amount you have to :) It was filmed way back in October last year, quite strange for me watching it now, six months later. Blocking[edit]

Thank you for telling me that. The reason why I blocked this user permanently is that he/she has been particularly troublesome over the last couple of weeks. He has a history of vandalism, under several IP aliases, and he spews antisemitic comments across the talk page of any user who is Jewish, or who has a Jewish-sounding name. He is VERY determined, and short term blocks DON'T work with him, I'll tell you, as will others who have had dealings with him. That's why I've been so heavy-handed in blocking him permanently. Still, I understand your position, so I'll give it a chance to work. David Cannon 11:50, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Sorry. I wanted to include the "(administrator)" tag in my name, which is not usually included in my signature. I have a boilerplate script on my computer that I just paste when I want to do that; it includes the date and time also. The four Tildas won't do it, as I haven't set it up to put the administrator tag in. As 99 percent of my edits don't need it, I see little point in setting it up that way.

I take your point, however, and will avoid this way in future. David Cannon 12:41, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)

DYK bot...[edit]

I think it works still... not too terribly certain. You'll just have to wait when the 1st of next month rolls around. -- AllyUnion (talk) 23:18, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Double check it please. -- AllyUnion (talk) 11:29, 2 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Might be some strange text or something that was left on the archive page. I can't program the bot to understand with 100% accuracy of what to do... since people might do weird stuff. -- AllyUnion (talk) 11:53, 2 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like a very minor error with the code... but possibly was screwed up by weird stuff on the page. Eh. It looks like it does the job with say... 97% accuracy. Just may need some human checking on it each month. -- AllyUnion (talk) 11:56, 2 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like it also carried over its minor mistakes too... I don't know why that is... I'll have to look into it when I get some free time. -- AllyUnion (talk) 11:58, 2 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My RFA[edit]

Thank you for your comments on my RFA. Although the voting period just ended with a 14-8-2 vote, I will admit once and for all that I used it more as an evaluation of myself. Being promoted would have been a plus. I was more interested in who voted, when they voted, who would change their votes and when, and the comments I would receive. Hopefully I will correct the main weakness that was raised by those who voted oppose -- that I was too eager to put articles on VFD. Also, I will try to interact more with those Wikipedians who did not vote at all.

As for next month, I don't know if I will nominate myself again. I might not think about it until somebody else puts me up there on RFA at a later date. Eventually, I see myself as an admin, especially as the number of articles and users continues to grow. Thanks again and good luck at improving this vast archive of free knowledge.
