The section other flags is quite unclear on whether the facts stated refer to all countries or only to the UK's Royal Navy. Maybe somebody could clarify? Simon A. 13:06, 22 Aug 2004 (UTC)

The article is generic, so "other flags" can contain information about any maritime flag of any country, other than ensigns and jacks. Andrew Yong 22:53, 25 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Andrew: Of course, it can and should contain generic information. But I wondered wether, e.g. the Gin Pennant is only a UK thing or used in other nation as well. (Ok, this one is obvious: The idea of a Gin Pennant simply seems to be inherently British.) Simon A. 12:20, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)

From the 'Etiquette' section: "the flying of the ensign of one country below that of another country on the same ensign staff is a sign that the ship has been captured by forces of that other country." It is not clear enough which flag represents the "other country." I assume the flag of the capturing country is above, but I have no knowledge in this area other than from this article. 17:17, 30 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Legal Issues / POV[edit]

This article is unclear. What is the frame of reference? Assertions are made that specific actions are illegal, but where is the action considered illegal and who enforces this? I would be surprised to learn that a civilian ship flying the Union Jack in Indonesian waters would be violating laws there, though if this is the case everywhere (perhaps through international treaties, etc.), this should be mentioned. This article may need a "limited geographic scope" banner or at least some specificity throughout the article as to what part of the world specific laws and customs apply.DavidGC 11:00, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

fair use image[edit]

Is there a fair use rationale that can be made for Image:Hellenic Navy Admiral Flag.JPG ? Is there another image that would show the same feaure? I've asked on Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Greece#image_copyright for someone to try to figure out the copyright owner. John Vandenberg 05:29, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

House flags[edit]

Just from observation I think "now usually flown from the jackstaff" is doubtful. most merchant ships that fly a houseflag do so from the signal mast above the bridge, usually on the port side (port yardarm in old parlance), or in a similar position on the foremast. Sometimes they fly a smaller houseflag or a company jack at the bow - but most merchant ships do not have a jack-staff. Refs needed though. Davidships (talk) 02:03, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Same (I'm a merchant navy officer), the company flag goes on the flag line on the portside spreader/yardarm on the forward/secondary mast. (courtesy on the sb/main, signal on the ps/main) We got a jackstaff but there only goes a flag/jack if there are celebrations in port.Ian Splinter (talk) 11:41, 7 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
