Discussion[edit]

Anyone who does think that this is racist, just take a look and see if this stereotype holds true. Go to the Southern USA and see for yourself. The only good thing that could come of this is that some ignorant black people might try to become educated.

Sure sounds racist to me. -- Zoe

  • Any performance that focuses on stereotypes to fihd humor could be contrued as bigoted. But is it not the intent behind the performance and material that drives the ultimate message? It is almost assured that were a black female doing the same performances it wouldn't be protested; she would be heralded as finding humor in a legitimate sect of her culture that is often overlooked or demonized.

I chopped out all the PR puff-piece language to just present the facts. Alcarillo 19:35, 6 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds racists[edit]

The fact that the performer so easily discounts the comments of the many black people who find this racist, is very revealing of true attitudes towards blacks as a group. (unsigned comment)

And the fact that I have black friends that laugh right beside me while pointing fingers at each other while listening his antics shows that not every black person considers it offensive for a white man to poke fun of racial stereotypes that are quite true of some black people, including some in my small circle alone. Chris Rock makes fun of white people in the Southern United States as well as rednecks in general from time to time and I never hear about people wanting to boycott him. It is not intended as racism, but it isn't humor that everyone will appreciate or will enjoy, either. — CobraWiki ( jabber | stuff ) 07:17, 27 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to article[edit]

I cut out a big chunk of the "personal history" for "Shirley" in the article. I understand that it's part of her act, but I think listing sixty names of "her children" is a bit of overkill, and not what Wikipedia is here for. The remaining text relays the essence of the act, and people who are interested in her material can springboard from there and find her skits. NickBurns 02:52, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Merge Discussion[edit]

It has been suggested that this article should be merged with Chuck Knipp. Discuss. — CobraWiki ( jabber | stuff )

  • I will give my view now: Oppose. The articles should not be merged because, within a specific group, this is a well-known character. The voices of all cartoon characters are not merged in with the people who voice them. They have their own articles. Why should this be different? — CobraWiki ( jabber | stuff ) 18:31, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. I found this page while searching Google, I would have never found it had I searched for the male character that actually plays Shirley Q Liquor... This page rightfully deserves a place on Wiki, and for those who say he is racist, how can he be, he's a black man portraying a female Black preacher in Church, and this is purely for entertainment, NOT for offending people. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.8.112.119 (talk) 22:19, 20 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]
Chuck Knipp is a white man, not a black man. He plays this woman in blackface, and that's VERY offensive. 172.146.210.244 06:21, 27 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Agree, simply because Chuck Knipp is "famous" ONLY for this character. He has done nothing notable outside of Shirley Q. Liquor, and had no career before it. 172.146.210.244 06:16, 27 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • Not true- Betty Butterfield is another persona of Knipp who is famous on Youtube. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.138.202.82 (talk) 09:20, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
